SPL has a broad spectrum of opportunities for doing front ranking research in the areas of Atmospheric, Space and Planetary Sciences. These opportunities can be classified into the following categories.

1) Research Fellows (Doctoral Fellowship):

SPL has a very vibrant research fellow’s program, with a strength of about 20 to 25 students at any time of the year. Every year, SPL recruits 5 to 6 Junior Research Fellows (JRFs) through its own written test and interviews conducted around June-August time period. Online applications for JRFs are sought through advertisements in national dailies around March-April. These positions are meant for candidates having M. Sc. in Physics/applied physics/space physics/meteorology/atmospheric sciences or any other allied field or with M.Sc Physics with specialization in any one of the above subjects including electronics, or M. Tech in Atmospheric/Space/Planetary Sciences/Applied Physics or allied fields. Selected students first undergo coursework, and subsequently work under the supervision of a senior faculty of the SPL. All the students selected for research receive fellowship, which is extendable up to a maximum of 5 years. The fellowship is extended each year after the student passes the review conducted by Academic Committee of the SPL and the external review conducted by the VSSC.

2) Research Associates (Post Doctoral Research Fellowship):

The Research Associate Positions are always OPEN at SPL and the candidates can apply any time of the year.

1. Candidates should have Ph.D. degree in Science or Technology and the Ph.D. thesis should be in the areas of Atmospheric Science/ Space science/ Planetary sciences/ Atmospheric Modelling which are relevant to the fields of research being carried out at SPL.
2. Only those candidates who have carried out their Ph.D. work outside SPL are eligible to apply. 
3. Candidates possessing PhD awarded by foreign Universities/Institutions have to produce an Equivalency Certificate issued by the Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi

4) Research proposal (maximum of 2000 words) on the work they intend to carry out at SPL in the domain of SPL’s research activity 
5) Detailed Bio-data
6) Scanned copy of the certificates (self attested)

Upper Age Limit:  
40 years (43 years for OBC candidates and 45 years in case of SC/ST candidates. Persons with Disability are eligible for age relaxation as per rules). Age will be reckoned as on June 30th and Dec 31st of every year. 

Selection Process:
Screening of applications will be done periodically subject to availability of vacancies. The qualification prescribed is the minimum requirement and the same does not automatically make candidates eligible for the interview. After the initial screening of the application and considering the merit of the submitted research proposal, the candidates found suitable will be called for an interview at VSSC. 

Pay and Allowances :

The Research Associateship is initially for a period of ONE YEAR and is renewable annually for a total period of two years (three years in exceptional cases). There will be a review of the progress of the work before the renewal every year. The RA position carries an amount of Rs.36000/- for the first year, Rs.38, 000/- for the second year and Rs.40, 000/- for the third year. Candidates are also eligible for HRA as admissible to regular employees of VSSC.

General Conditions :

1. The number of positions indicated above is provisional.
2. Candidates will have to produce proof of the details furnished in their applications submitted at the time of interview [Originals of all certificates, mark sheets, Ph.D. degree in proof of educational qualification, (Equivalency Certificate in case of foreign Degree) Proof of work experience, age, etc.]
3. Those applicants who are employed under Central / State Government / Public Sector Undertakings / Autonomous Bodies should produce No Objection Certificate, from the employer concerned.
4. Only short listed candidates will be called for Interview. 
5. Outstation candidates called for Interview will be paid to and fro Second Class Railway Fare by the shortest route including reservation/sleeper charges on production of proof of journey such as Railway Tickets/Ticket Number or Bus tickets, etc.  If the candidates travel in a higher class of accommodation than the one prescribed, only Second Class rail fare excluding the reservation charges/sleeper charges will be paid.
6. If any information furnished in the application is found to be incorrect or false on verification, the candidate will not be permitted to attend for interview and Travelling Allowance will not be paid.
7. The Centre reserves the right not to fill up the position, if it so decides.
8. Only Indian Nationals need apply. 
9. No interim correspondence will be entertained.
10. Canvassing in any form will be a disqualification.

SPL has two types of PDF program:

(a) The Research Fellows of SPL, after submitting their Ph. D. thesis may be given PDF position, based on an interview conducted by PDF Committee of the laboratory. The candidate has to submit an application along with a research proposal. This PDF is normally for a period of 2 years, extendable by one more year in exceptional cases.
(b) The other type of PDF is for external Ph. D. holders. Application for this PDF can be made at any time of the year by submitting a research proposal along with a CV and publication list to the Director SPL. Selection is made based on an interview conducted by SPL. Number of PDF positions at any time for this category is five. Any enquiry for these positions can be directed to the Director SPL.

In addition to the above, SPL hosts INSPIRE faculty and NPDF candidates to carry out their research activities.

3) Visiting Scientists (VSs):

SPL has a visiting scientist (VS) program, which either operates through ADCOS VS program, or directly by SPL, where the same guidelines as that of ADOCS RFS (ADREF) are followed

These positions are for senior scientists who have sufficient experience and hold a permanent position elsewhere. Applications can be made any time of the year to the Director SPL. Any enquiry for these positions can be directed to the Director SPL.
